LEAVE A LASTING IMPACT ON OPMD ASSOCIATION
Planned giving allows you to leave a legacy of support for the OPMD Association in many ways that you may not be able to do during your lifetime. These ways of giving may also provide tax benefits for you. By supporting OMPD through planned giving, you can help us ensure that we are able to continue to fulfill our mission to advocate for and serve people affected with Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy by providing education, resources and programs and by creating partnerships with research institutions and corporations in order to discover treatments and a cure for OPMD.
Why Consider Participating in Planned Giving?
Planned giving donations may help you avoid capital gains taxes, receive tax deductions upfront, and may have other financial benefits for you and your family. These legacy gifts help us expand our reach and ensure that our work continues in perpetuity.
How to Participate in Planned Giving?
There are many ways to participate in planned giving with the OPMD Association. Here are some of the most common vehicles:
Wills and Trusts (Bequests)
Join our community of support by making a gift to the OPMD Association in your will or trust. Wills and trusts are the most common planned gift. You may adjust your plans at any time if life circumstances change. This type of donation to OPMD in your will or living trust helps ensure that we continue our mission for years to come.
You can make a charitable donation by naming the OPMD Association as a beneficiary in your will. The federal government encourages these gifts or bequests by allowing an unlimited estate-tax charitable deduction. There are four ways you can make a bequest:
General Bequest
This is the most popular type of charitable bequest. You simply leave a specified dollar amount to the designated charity.
Residual Bequest
Your estate will cover all debts, taxes, expenses, and specific bequests. The remaining amount — the residue — will be transferred to the OPMD Association.
Contingent Bequest
You can ask that the OPMD Association receive all or a portion of your estate only under certain circumstances. For example, you can name OPMD as a beneficiary of your estate only if there are no surviving close family members. Childless couples sometimes provide for the entire estate to go to the surviving spouse, or if the spouse does not survive, to the OPMD Association.
Percentage Bequest
You can designate a percentage of the estate or of the residual estate. If the size of the estate changes, the bequest to the OPMD Association will change in the same proportion.
If you are interested in naming the OPMD Association in your bequest, we suggest the following language: “I hereby give, devise and bequeath (dollar amount or description of gift) to the OPMD Association, a nonprofit organization located at 18018 Overlook Loop, Suite 105 #1050, San Antonio, TX 78259, Federal Tax ID #88-1258710, for its general use and purpose.”

Stocks, Bonds and Securities
You can donate appreciated stocks or other securities to the OPMD Association. Gifting these to OPMD can help you avoid tax on capital gains and can give you a charitable tax deduction.
Gifts of Real Estate
Donating your home, land, vacation property, or other real estate to the OPMD Association can help you avoid capital gains taxes.
Retirement Assets
When you name the OPMD Association as the primary beneficiary on your retirement, you can avoid income and estate taxes. A gift from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or inherited IRA are all excellent ways to support OPMD.
Gifts of Insurance
You can designate the OPMD Association as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy. You can also name OPMD as an owner of the policy. This can allow you to receive a charitable deduction and reduce your estate taxes.
